Mill
The Humboldt Mill is one of the smallest survivors here on the West Side. Designed by J. T. Noyes and Sons, it was built in
1878 immediately after the first
Washburn Crosby "A" Mill exploded due to grain dust. This catastrophic explosion completely blew apart the "A" and the original
Humboldt, but being smaller, the Humboldt was able to be rebuilt very quickly.
Fire still is a problem for these old buildings. Most of the older ones still have wood timbers and floors and burn nicely
when ignited. The red blobs above the window openings were caused by the heat from the fire that destroyed most of the interior
of this mill just a couple of years ago.
I'm assuming that this mill will either be part of the Mill Ruins Park complex, or it will be turned into fancy housing. It's
soon to acquire a new neighbor in the new Guthrie Theater, so I'm sure anything built into this shell will do nicely.
